Southwest Missouri State U. ;-)

Computer Science. I find that the ultra-high-tech side of my life requires
the basics of backpacking to achieve the sense of balance that I love so
much.

> Where are you from?
I'm originally from a small town near Springfield, MO. I currently live in
Springfield, but I've only been back for about 2 years. I left for 4 while
in the military. When I got done with that chapter I started college at
University of Arkansas. A couple of years ago circumstances brought me
back here, and now I'm planning to leave again. My hike will be the
beginning of a lot of changes in my life. I'm putting everything I own in
storage, selling my car, and getting on a bus to travel to
Gainesville. After I'm done hiking I'll be moving to Portland, OR, to put
some time into career life before I begin grad school (not yet sure if I'm
going to go for a PhD in engineering, comp. sci. or religious studies) at
some undetermined time in the future.

> Gear list?
I'm actually still working on this. I'm not yet certain what I'll be
taking. I'm used to hiking with a lot more weight on my back than the
average long-distance hiker, so I'm trying to pare it down
somewhat. Things I know I'll have (counting clothes on my back), though:

2 of those horrible Nalgene bottles ( I like 'em a lot )
whistle
compass
map
first aid kit (crevat, bandaids, superglue, tweezers, iodine, Immodium AD,
and Motrin)
Capilene mid-weight long-sleeve
Capilene mid-weight longjohns
A&F swim trunks for shorts (they're amazingly light weight, dry really
well, and have been surprisingly durable)
convertible pants
3 pair socks
Mountain Hardwear rainjacket
Military poncho liner (for summer) (still considering buying a new
sleeping bag to replace my old one for spring/fall before I start hiking)
I'd also like to get a Nomad before I leave, but that's dependent on cash
flow in the next couple of months.
Right now my pack is a Lowe Alpine Australis 90 that may get replaced.

I have a lot of gear I can work with, but that I'd like to replace for
lighter weight stuff before I leave.
