[at-l] Logging near the AT in Maine

A few hundred yards North of the Hurd Brook Shelter in Maine the trail
passes within 20 yards of recent logging. The plastic survey tapes, stumps,
and sawdust are clearly seen from the trail. The loggers must have a road
that runs in from the River Road. It saddened me to see this on my hike this
weekend, and I asked about it at the Abol Bridge Store. They were of the
opinion someone had been cutting in advance of the November election that had
a referendum question about small wood lots.
There's also a trail marked with blue plastic tape that leads up a small
mountain (Pitman?) to two Paper Company rental cabins. Last spring I followed
the taped trail, and the first cabin was less than a mile (my estimate) from
the Hurd Brook Shelter.
The Wilderness ain't what it used to be. But then, it never was.
