Did you have to pay an entrance fee for this race?  If so, I can see the 
similarities between hikers and runners.  Runners pay people to have the 
privilege of doing something that makes them sweat, hurts, and provides a 
high that can't be beat by drugs.

Hikers pay a lot of money for gear so they can voluntarily go out into the 
woods and sweat, hurt and get a high only possible with nature.

How many runners are on this list?  Cooincidence?  I think not.
