Even almost 30 years ago there were some scarey incidents involving
firearms in the hands of ignorant and/or angry non-hikers; I had three
encounters that ranged from mildly frightening to assault by threat (
with a gun ), to "Oh, ----, that idiot was really gonna shoot me!"
