Can't sew, but laying linoleum has taught me that newspaper patterns
are a pain in the butt.  Think maybe butcherpaper or tyvek even.
Actually, tyvek might make a good "sample" material if ya can get
some.  As far as advice.....there is a sight called 
just make it yourself or something to that effect....might help
