Got an update from a fellow Floridian. This is an excellent article on
chiggers:
http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/Entomology/entfacts/struct/ef630.htm
Most importantly, "After secreting digestive enzymes, they suck up liquefied
host tissues. They neither suck blood nor burrow into the skin. The rash and
intense itching associated with chiggers is an allergic reaction to the
mite's salivary secretions."
Makes me feel better (although just as itchy as always)!
Can't stop hiking, even if it is August in Florida. :)
Cheers, Navigator
