[at-l] rocks

Just catching up on all the e-mail after being away for a week. I haven't
been up to the ADKs in a bit, so I never saw the pile of rocks in the
parking lot. I understand that it started out as a large pile with a sign
explaining that they were to be used for work on the summit of Marcy and
that the pile was eventually carried up there.
I've done a lot of trail work up in the Daks, and on several trips assisted
in protecting the tundra growth on Marcy's summit by banking the eroded
sides of the soil with rock. We used up all the available rock in the
summit area and were hiking down the trail about 1/3 of a mile to collect
rocks, which we then carried up in our daypacks. Do I need to tell you
about the looks we were getting from the dayhikers as we filled our packs
with rock?
