Eminent domain is a governmental function.  Its no more stealing than
taxation is stealing (although there may be some debate on that point).
Our society would be very different and difficult without it.  The
question comes down to this: can someone who happens to own a piece of
land in a place that has become uniquely desireable for a [road, school,
dump, park, trail, etc. you name it] stop the government (and therefore
all of us) from acquiring it, or demand an inflated price for it.
Eminent domain provides a means for us as a society to prevent that.
