While the idea of a North Woods National Park is wonderful, it's my 
understanding that the opposition from within Maine is very strong.
Organizations like SAM (Sportsman Alliance of Maine) and the paper companies 
are opposed, claiming that they can 'preserve' the north woods by having 
landowners put 'conservation easements' into thier deeds. They also argue 
that by 'losing' the north woods to the Federal Goverment the locals will not 
only lose jobs, they will no longer be able to use the land for 'recreation'.
 At first glance, MWNP looks like a sure bet, but there's a serious move 
afoot to fix the game.
