OK, a quick primer:

Visit http://www.aldha.org for information on The Gathering. 

It's an annual get-together of AT thru-hikers and wannabes, at which our 
internet group has had a growing presence over the years. It's always held 
Columbus Day weekend. This year, it's in Pipestem WV at Concord College. It's 
a weekend of classroom-setting type learning experiences about hiking. Lots 
of presentations to choose from. One of the most valuable events a newbie 
hiker could attend. And it's not JUST about the AT. There are plenty of other 
long-distance hikes around the globe discussed, dissected, and shown in 
slide-show form.
