One way is to simply wet a 9 volt battery and touch it to loosely wadded 
steel wool. It makes a bright brief red flame, and leaves a bit of reddish 
rusty colored ash. This was another of those pyrotechnic displays in small 
town western NC that regularly got my butt kicked.
