Not really.  I've left the trail "south" of Newfound Gap at a shelter of
which the name escapes me, gone down Middle Prong trail and out at Tremont.
There are places along there to park your car.  There used to be a place way
in along the river, but a huge flood several years ago wiped that out.  I
don't know if it's been rebuilt.  Anyway, the Smoky Mountains Institute
research and education center is along that road.  The town you arrive at
going that way is Townsend.  I've done it a couple of times.  Nice trail
down.  Leslie
