[at-l] Pepper Spray and Loud Noises

I'm getting ready to go backpacking in Glacier and have 2 questions:

All I read suggests that bear bells are not loud enough to work in grizzly 
country, and that making loud noise is better (clapping and shouting).  Any 
suggestions on how often to clap and shout (so much for the serenity of the 
wilderness)?

Second question is this:  Can  you pack pepper spray on checked baggage.  I 
noticed the REI ships it only in surface mail, so does that mean you can't 
check it in your baggage.  By the way, what do you call a hiker with pepper 
spray?
