Not all quite true - they are NOT wealthy. In fact we restarted the
negotiations at one point because they were very strapped for money. The
hiking community (mostly ALDHA) raised a lot of money to refurbish the part
of the building that has been used by thru-hikers. They use it off-season
for their own purposes, i.e. rent it out for retreats. Fundamentally the
problem is that they are incapable of or unwilling to make decisions in a
timely fashion.

I urge all hikers who stay at Graymoor to contribute to the cost of meals
etc. It is not a free service, it is a free service with an expected
donation if you can afford it. Fortunately the service to hikers and the
land negotiations have always been completely disjoint and everything we do
should promote that notion.
