This sounds just like another thru-hiker who was at the Antietam Shelter,
when I thru-hiked in 1989. There were signs posted all over the place,
stating that the water in Antietam Creek and at the Old Forge Park was
contaminated with Giardia and to treat the water before use. What does this
guy do, he says there is no need to treat the water and uses it without any
treatment. A few days later he found out just what a fool he was.
Prevention is better then the cure!!
Today in the mail I received the 2000 water Quality Report, from the Tampa
Water Department. I this report it stated:
"During 1999, the Tampa Water Department tested for Cryptosporidium and
Giardia in both the raw water and finished water. Samples were collected
approximately two times a month from the raw water and five times a month
from the finished water. About ONE-THIRD of the RAW water samples were found
to CONTAIN the organisms.
Cryptosporidium and Giardia were not found in any of the finished water
samples; the organisms were eliminated in the treatment process."
