Re: [at-l] Phenol red
Actually, that may be correct. Part of declaring a water source safe
includes the exposure to potential contamination. An aquifer is clearly
protected (unless it is near the Savannah River Plant), while a puddle out
back of Ray's Transmission and Gameroom is not so well protected - even
after Ray got indoor plumbing.
The lack of illnesses in those who have used a questionable water supply is
no assurance of safety. As in the UV thread of last year, exposure to
pathogens has variable risk of disease. There may even be some benefit from
low level exposures, as is beginning to be considered by those questioning
the broad use of antimicrobial products. But when an insurer or mortgage
investor get involved, you can expect any risk to be against your
pocketbook. The lab in question also has liabilities, and will use a
rigorous definition of safety.
You should be able to ask the lab about the definitions of "safe" and
whether it is similar to definitions of sex, the word "is" or other arcane
concepts. I can't wait until I get home tonight for a nice cold bottle of
Bear Whiz Beer. Remember the slogan: "It's in the water."
