A 5 year old girl is the youngest, but more than one 6 year has throughhiked.
And for most parties, the parents did *not* have extensive backpacking
background or undergo specific efforts at preparation.
One specific name is "Michael Sellman" I think. He ended up on the cover of
Backpacker some time in '80 or '81. A short article -- which did NO justice
-- is in that issue.
The single greatest thing I can tell you about kids and backpacking comes
from (or "is credited to") Otto von Bismarck:
"You can do anything with children, if you just make it play."
