Re: [at-l] Solo tent opinions wanted
For solo tents, I own the Zephyr (not the XT) and a Nomad
(wanderlustgear.com).
The non-XT Zephyr has no vestibule but weighs less than the Eclipse. I
bought it as the only solo tent I could find in 1998 that was really long
enough for me (I'm 6'1"). I just had to completely unload my pack to get
everything in the tent on rainy nights. I also like the fact that it is
freestanding. Can't really cook and stay dry at the same time though.
I left the Zephyr at home for my thruhike.
I carried a Nomad. Weighs ~1.5 pounds and gives more space on the inside
than the Eureka. There was plenty of room for me and all of my gear inside
the tent (without having to completely unpack) and room to cook and stay dry
under the awning (only with a stove that will NOT flare up). It's not
freestanding but with your hiking poles as primary support and only three
stakes (two in non-threatening weather), it might as well have been. It's a
bit sensitive to wind but still, I only had shift my tent once on the entire
thruhike. Didn't have to unload anything, just moved it with all my stuff
in it and restaked.
Hmm, maybe if you park the tent a bit further from the fire ring to begin
with, freestanding wouldn't be as much of an issue?
