Re: [at-l] Re: Hydration systems
I replied off list yesterday, but thought I'd inject my wisdom anyway.
Cascade Designs does a great job replacing Platypus bags on warranty, even
when the problem is from folding the bag as they tell you to avoid. Duct
Tape works very well in such leaks along the seams. I found the bite valves
(old version) went bad when I used an old PUR filter. Small chunks of
carbon would get into the water, and either block the slit, or hold the
slit open. It could be hard to remove, further opening the slit and
allowing a drip. The newer bite valves have a smaller opening as they plug
into the tubing, perhaps a smaller opening for the charcoal bits. I expect
the same problem, but blame the filter and not the Platypus design.
I do not like the Big Zip. It is hard to close with cold water and cold
hands. I have one and use tor spare/dirty water for prefilter or camp use.
I prefer the 2.4 liter size for walking, and carry 2. One is usually all I
fill unless water is scarce. And I find the Gatorade (T) always works well,
and never leaves an aftertaste!
