Stop, take a good look, say nice snaky, then step around or over it and be on

The poisonous have small holes in their fangs for the poison to flow thru.
Seriously, Go to a zoo or somewhere that has Copperheads and Rattlesnakes,
Take a good look; you'll remember those and don't worry about any that don't
look like them. If you are the very paranoid type also look at a Water
Moccasin although I can't think of anywhere on the AT that you might run into
them.
