The lithium battery in the Photon should work just fine in sub-zero
temps.
Lithium batteries in general are not affected much by cold.

It could also be the nest of some sort of bees that burrow into the
ground (or maybe they are wasps or cicada-killers), I forget the name.
The nest smells rather reminiscent of apple cider vinegar. :P
