It's back.
Pulled this from USA Today the other day, and it got put aside....
USA TODAY, THURSDAY MAY 25, 2000:
A pen-shape device that uses ordinary salt and a tiny battery to disinfect
water promises to make safe drinking water easily available to soldiers,
backpackers, international travelers, and victims of floods and other natural
disasters, scientists report today.
GROSS SYSNOPSIS:
UNC-Chapel Hill. Nasties including crypto. 5 ounces, about the size of a
felt-tip. "works by generating a small electric current that is passed
through a saltwater solution to produce mixed oxidents. When these
concentrated disinfectants were added to a 1 liter container of contaminated
water, ..., within 10 minutes researchers found 'there was a dramatic
reduction of all test bacteria and viruses...even those that cannot be killed
or filtered out by most water purification methods."
[I wonder what that means in real life?]
Device treats 300 liters before new battery needed.
Introduced at meeting of American Society for Microbiology mtg. Developed for
Latin America/cholera by UNC researcher, with/for Miox Corporation, with
D.A.R.P.A. dollars (the military agency which brought us the internet, but
shhhh, don't tell Al Gore).
Being tested for US military.
Miox hopes to have it in stores next summer for $100.
Wonder how long before it hits Sierra Trading Post?
