Cell phones work on line of site and on
the AT ridgelines and its narrow pathway in most locations you have access
if you wish to take one; however, when hiking out
west, many times you can not "get"
a cell phone as their is not
a cell phone tower in reachable connect.
Cell phones do not work in a valley unless the tower in on that ridgeline.
For some people hiking they desire
no safety equipment, for others with
family commitments such as a spouse and children, it's part of a safety
package for them but I use it for ordering the pizza from the trailhead
going into town :)
now that's really important ???
