I am not passing judgement on cell phones, just relaying the statements of
someone who lived through a real emergency, and wished they had one.
Actually, where she was, a cell phone would have worked just fine. The PCT
is almost always ON the "high-point." Cell phones work OK on the first 400
miles of the PCT where it stays on the mountain spine above urban Southern
California. She was line of site with an interstate, 8000 ft above Palm
Springs.
Once a hiker hits the Sierra, time to chuck the cell phone......
