I also wonder if you expend more energy when using vs. not using poles on
terrain like this.  Anyway, I have a rather idiosyncratic solution to the
problem -- I have a water bottle holster on each side of my pack waistbelt.
When I don't need to use my poles, I keep them (the poles) attached to my
wrists, and hook my thumbs inside my shoulder straps at about chest level
and let the poles rest on my water bottle holsters  (easier done than
said...)  The poles are immediately available for use just by swinging them
down, and can easily be "retracted" when not needed.  Works perfectly for
me.
