Here is an option that will be available in a few years, it is called the
Cumberland trail, and it will be to the west of the Smokies.  The biggest
disadvantage is that it is not, nor will likely be connected to the AT, so
it is not much of a blue blaze.  

You will have to get off of the AT go to the CT, walk in a north easterly
direction and then get off of the CT at the TN/KY/VA border and hop back
onto the AT.  You will bypass all of the GSMNP and most of TN/NC. 

It is just under 50% complete, but when it is it will be maintained as a TN
State Park (hopefully that is a good thing).
