GREAT WESTERN NATIONAL TRAIL STUDY DRAFT AVAILABLE

Ogden, UT-- The Forest Service is completing a study report to examine
the feasibility of amending the National Trails System Act to establish a
new national trail that would stretch from Mexico to Canada. A Great
Western Trail draft report is now available for general public review.
The
proposed route would be designated along established roads and trails.

The trail study was authorized by Congress. The draft examines the
suitability for designating the trail as a National Scenic, National
Historic, or National Recreation Trail. The study also examines
designation under a new proposed category called National Discovery
Trails.

The purpose of the trail is to provide a connected, long-distance trail
experience that can accommodate the entire trails community.
Approximately
1,900 miles of the Great Western Trail have already been established over
the past ten years. Established segments are located primarily on public
lands in Arizona and Utah. Proposed routes include areas of Arizona,
Utah,
Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. In order to establish a continuous route,
the
trail may cross federal, state, tribal, county, or private property. A
multiple system of interwoven routes, capable of accommodating different
types of trail use is envisioned.

The public is invited to comment on the draft report. A 30-page summary
or
a full document (175 pages) will be mailed upon request. Copies of both
are also available on the web at

A final study report is scheduled for early summer release. To be most
helpful, comments on the draft should be received by April 14, 2000.
