Try 10 months. The company I work for, Lucent Technologies, has production
plans for wireless, compact, and powerful personal communicators. Real Star
Trek stuff. Working from satellites, not cell towers, the devices will allow
users to connect with the web, remote access their personal computers, email,
telephone, take digital video with audio, and have a g.p.s./map system.
Already in place is a 'panic/911', where one button will pinpoint your
location within 100 meters, and then signal your exact position when help
nears, similar to avalanche locators. The Bell Labs folks have even planned a
vital signs transmitter, a kerchief sized solarpower panel, and a picture
phone setup. All in a palm-pilot sized package!
Cool.
