I didn't say I have all the answers, but for sure, stouter ropes and chains
might have helped.

I think the fact is that many people have, or develop, multiple dreams in
their areas of interest.  It can seem like a shallow existence to have a
single big-ticket focus that dominates you for so long that, once having
achieved it, you are left with a certain questioning emptiness.
Through-hikers sometimes experience letdown in weeks following completion,
for instance.  And that's true even without the news that their significant
other is leaving, for example.  Or that they are keeping the house and
you're leaving.  Well, to each his/her own...
