Looked at my journal:

***

9/25/93: Up before sunrise, ate 2 bags of granola with the blueberries I
picked yesterday. Saw another bull moose today--closer--20 feet. He was a
little younger, I think, with a much smaller rack, and lighter in color. I
talked to him, which stopped him and piqued his curiosity. When he decided
to leave, he was gone just like that--'melted into the woods,' as they so
aptly say. Once again I could smell the strong, pungent odor of bull moose
in rut, something like a cross between cat spray and a gun barrel. Later,
on the hardwood bench just before dropping into Black Brook Notch, I caught
the unmistakable odor again. Spoor!

Last night I dreamed I was dancing outside to African rythyms, in the midst
of farm sheds and outbuildings. At Hall Mt. leanto, I find this entry in
the register: "If God is everywhere, and cleanliness is next to godliness,
how can God be next to me?--Kilgore Trout"

9/27/93: Arrived at East B Hill Rd. at about 8:30 or so, and waited in
vain in the rain for a ride, so I started walking, singing to keep my
spirits up. Eight vehicles passed me by--I ended up walking 5 of the 8
miles to town, making up the "Andover Blues" on the way.

Dreamt of a hump-backed grown bear running through the woods, which then
turned into a wolfish creature with two cubs; shift to closeup view of them
tearing ravenously at a rabbit still warm, all on the trail just a few feet
behind me.

Dreamt of a family of black bears, which all enjoy sliding on their backs
and sides down a gravel bank at the edge of the river. They are watchful
of me, but tolerate my presence.

9/28/93: The maples have turned first. There are vast stands of red
foliage. The birches and beeches haven't really gone yet. On the forest
floor, the effect is green and gold before the eyes, with an orange and red
backdrop overhead. Two or three weeks will bring air filled with flying
leaves.

9/30/93: Today, besides freezing water, ice on the trail, and hoarfrost on
the trees, I saw two groups of southbound Canadian geese. Winter is
coming! Winter is coming!

Well--according to the map, that is the Frye Notch area--between Andover
and Grafton Notch. Didn't even mention the place in my journal. I do
remember Dunn Notch with the nice waterfall. But Frye Notch? Not a glimmer.
