I don't know if you NEED traveller's checks, but I used them as my primary
money and found them very handy (if you have them in small enough
increments). The problem with just a debit card type thing is that more
than a couple of these towns don't have ATMs. While that isn't a problem
most of the time, since most places do allow credit cards, it can be
difficult with the hostels and such in the north not to have actual cash or
something related. There was only one place I ever went into that didn't
take traveller's checks - the bakery/market type watchamacallit in DWG.
