Yes you'll find a pair of ski poles or Lekis fitted with snow baskets will
help tremendously.

For really steep downhills you might want to approach it by not heading
straight down but switchbacking to manage the grade. It might take you
longer to get where you're going but you stayed upright. Side stepping is
awkward. Try not to step on the downhill shoe. Ski poles give tremendous
aide in balance allowing you three points of contact with the snow. It's
impossible to side step if the conditions are icy, you'd just slide. Your
butt is usually a last resort even though you may not have wanted to choose
this method. :-)
