Re: [at-l] gear question for the night

Pepper Spray is a must for me when hiking. I was really glad that I had it
for my hike last year. I never had to use it,,,but there were plenty of
times I was glad I had it. Not for bears,,,but for the two legged varmints
and unfriendly dogs. I also carry Lekis and know how to use them for
defense. I would highly suggest that everyone know how to defend themselves
on the AT. I have had some scary experiences out there in the middle of no
where! Womyn have been raped every year on the AT, this is something NOT to
be taken lightly,,,YES,,,the AT is safer than just about anywhere else in
the USA ,,,, BUT,,,, if you are the one that gets raped (and yes men can be
raped also) or beaten, or bitten, those statistics don't mean squat. BTW,,,I
always carry my pepper spray where I can get to it,,attached to the front
strap of my pack (and when not wearing my pack) strapped to a belt loop. I
don't leave home without it. KC
