what is the difference btn white blazes and blue blazes. comical question,
i'm sure, but i don't know.
Damon

White blazes, 2"x6" rectangles, mark the majority of the official AT, except on the Long Trail (identically marked), where the AT is a sidetrail (blueblazed) where it splits to head into New Hampshire.

Blue blazes are (generally) used to mark side trails, to water, a leanto, a scenic view, a bad weather route, etc. "Blue blazing" used to mean "taking the scenic route" — as you may have heard, it now seems to mean "taking the sleazy route". This inaccuracy is a real shame, as blue blazing used to add real depth to a hike — now it seems the way to justify getting around something "too difficult/boring/wet/dry/yourcomplainthere."
