The one time I did it was after an eight hour hike in the rain on the Wassa
trail in Baxter. There was no one else 'on the books' to be there and the
skeeters were thick as fog in the leanto. I gained a little comfort, and
didn't have to start a six day hike with all my gear soaked.
Since then I've 'invented' an alternative-We had an old family sized tent
with a 4x4 no-see-um door. I cut the door out, and now I use that as a 'bug
net,' I tie a bootlace to the middle of the net and hang it from a thumb tack
directly over my head. Works better than trying to sleep in head net, because
it covers your arms too.
I usually avoid shelters that I have to share, I snore and it's not fair to
subject others to my 'chainsaw' all night
