For the most part, I just used those deet sticks (~28%) as they made it easy
to apply without getting the stuff all over your hands. There were a few
days (Jug End Road to Tyringham in MA) however when that just wasn't enough.
There, I slathered on the 100% every time I stopped moving. The mosquitos
there swarmed but wouldn't land if you had a fresh coat of deet on.
I suspect most years would be a bit worse than this year as the mosquito
population was probably kept down due to the drought.
I remember having to buy a deet stick along the way but don't remember if I
started with a new stick or not. I probably used less than 1.5 sticks and
1/4 of a tiny bottle of the 100% stuff.
I think the natural repellants only work for people who would normally not
get bit much anyway. Those of use who truly attrack the swarms need the
deet.
