The way it was explained to me.....
In the early days, there was no need for thruhikers to have trailnames 
because there were
so few of them.  As the informal trail community developed, it became the 
practice to sign
just your first name in the register.  One year there were three Steves 
hiking and confusion
ensued.
Have you seen Steve?
Which one.....Steve from Texas?
No the big Steve....
and viola...trailnames...

Anyone or remember Enoyna and Enoon....or was the Enoyreve:????
