This is the Beaufort (Wind Force) Scale for use on land.

The Beaufort number is often referred to as a "Force Number", say "Force
5 Fresh Breeze". At sea, small craft advisories are usually issued when
force 6 is reached.

1 Light Air Rising smoke drifts; weather
vane is inactive.

2 Light Breeze Leaves rustle, can feel wind on
your face, ordinary vane moved by wind. 4-5
3 Gentle Breeze Leaves and twigs move around,
light weight flags extend. 8-12
4 Moderate
Breeze Moves thin branches, raises dust and paper. 13-18
5 Fresh Breeze Small trees in leaf begin to sway,
crested wavelets form on inland waters. 19-24
6 Strong Breeze Large tree branches move, open wires
(such as telegraph wires) begin to "whistle",
umbrellas are difficult to keep under control.

7 Moderate Gale
/ Near Gale Large trees begin to sway, noticeably
difficult to walk.
32-38
8 Fresh Gale
/ Gale Twigs and small branches are broken from
trees, walking into the wind is very difficult.
39-46
9 Strong Gale Slight damage occurs to buildings, shingles
are blown off of roofs. 47-54
10 Whole Gale
/ Storm Large trees are uprooted, building damage
is considerable, seldom inland. 55-63
11 Storm/
Violent Storm Extensive widespread damage,
very rarely inland. 64-72
12 (- 17) Hurricane Extreme destruction. above
